The Simple Solution to Depression

I don’t know why I wait until depression has overwhelmed and crushed me to pray for God’s comfort. But I would like to say that the solution to depression is really, really simple to say, and it can be hard to do. It’s just this: pray without ceasing, and be thankful.

Today, I wanted to cry for practically the whole day. Until I prayed. Then I felt sweet relief. Better than any antidepressant could ever give me. My prayer was pretty short and simple too: “Lord, pleases forgive my sin and please comfort me.” God rushed to my side, and I felt joy and peace again. So simple, yet I wait until depression causes me to cry uncle just to say a simple little prayer.

The solution to depression is the joy that comes from being wrapped up in the comforting presence of God. And that comes through prayer. Things you can pray for/about include:

  • Forgiveness
  • A thank you prayer to God
  • Anxiety
  • Comfort
  • More righteousness
  • More faith
  • Joy
  • Peace
  • More contentment
  • Anger

I’m just giving you a short starter list of things to pray for/about.

In addition to praying without ceasing, rejoicing and thanking God are vital too. A thankful heart is a happy heart. So, if you have a hard time praying, you just have to get sick and tired of being sick and tired and become willing to do the footwork to feel better. Depression won’t go away without God’s presence, I promise. Temporary fixes like buying something or watching a movie or doing something won’t last. But the good news is, God isn’t going to resist or resent you for wanting Him to draw near to you. He will be delighted that you are seeking Him, and will rush to your side. God wants you to rejoice always, pray without ceasing, and thank Him in all circumstances; it’s His will for you. Don’t believe me? I’ll wrap this up with these scriptures and say one last thing: Do these things, and you’ll be amazed at the peace and joy you’ll have.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 ESV

16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Philippians 4:4-7

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
